Climb the Big Mountain road toward Whitefish Mountain Resort on a cold day and it is not unusual for the tire warning light to blink on somewhere around the switchbacks, even though nothing about the vehicle changed except the elevation. Colder air at altitude compresses faster than air at valley temperature, and that alone can pull pressure below the threshold that trips the light.

Each wheel carries a small sensor that reports pressure to the dashboard, warning you before a tire gets dangerously low.
