The Big Mountain road is not the place anyone wants to be swapping a spare, narrow shoulders, cold temperatures, and traffic still headed up toward the resort. When a flat happens on that climb, or anywhere else in Whitefish, we come to the vehicle rather than asking you to sort it out on the side of a mountain road, starting at $80.
Plug versus patch
A plug pushed into the outside of a tire might buy enough air to limp somewhere, but it is not built to last. What we do instead is a full patch, applied from the inside and bonded to the liner, the same repair standard whether the flat happened at a resort lot or in a driveway downtown.
Whether it can be saved
Punctures in the open tread, away from the sidewall, are usually good candidates for a repair, size and location permitting. Sidewall cuts are a different matter, and so is a tire that was driven any distance while flat, since the mountain road's grade tends to turn a slow limp into real structural damage fast. When repair is not the honest answer, we say so and talk through a new tire install instead.
If it happens on the climb
Get to a safe, level pullout if the road allows it before calling, and resist the urge to keep driving on a flat any farther than absolutely necessary, grade makes that mistake worse than it would be on flat ground. A balance check afterward is a good idea if the flat happened while you were moving at any real speed.
Worth checking while we're on site
Since we are already at the wheel, it is worth having the spare looked at too, if the vehicle carries one. Spares sit unused for years in a lot of cars, and a dry-rotted one is no help at all if you end up needing it on the Big Mountain road next winter.
