Montana law allows studded tires from October 1 through May 31, and most drivers here run some form of dedicated winter tire through that stretch regardless of studs. That means two swaps a year for a lot of Flathead Valley households, one in the fall before the roads turn, and one in the spring once the ice is done. Flathead Mobile Tire handles both, at your place, starting at $119.99.
Why a seasonal swap matters here
Winter tires and summer or all-season tires are built with different rubber compounds. Winter compounds stay flexible in the cold and grip on ice and packed snow. Summer and all-season compounds firm up in the cold, which actually costs you grip once temperatures drop, and they wear faster if you leave them on through a real Montana winter. Running the wrong set for the season is the single most common reason people end up sliding through an intersection in Kalispell or losing traction on the grade into Whitefish.
How the swap works
You book a time, we show up with a fully equipped mobile rig, and the swap happens right where your vehicle already is. There is no drop-off, no waiting room, no arranging a ride. We pull the current set, mount the other set, and torque everything to spec. Every wheel gets balanced on our Hunter SmartWeight Elite balancer as part of the job, not as an upsell.
What happens to your other set
If you are storing your own take-off tires, have them ready at the appointment, ideally somewhere dry and out of direct sun. If you would rather not deal with storage, ask us when you book and we will talk through options. Either way, tires that sit for months at a time do better stacked flat or hung than leaned against a wall for a whole season.
Booking around Montana's swap season
Fall and spring both get busy fast once the weather turns, since a lot of the valley tries to book in the same two-week window. Booking a little early, before the first hard freeze warning or before the last spring frost, usually means an easier time finding a slot that fits your schedule instead of squeezing in around everyone else's.
Where we do this
We run seasonal swaps across Kalispell, Whitefish, Columbia Falls, Bigfork, Lakeside, Somers and Evergreen. Driveways, office parking lots, lake cabins in the off season, wherever your vehicle is sitting, that is where the swap happens.
Ditch the lines. Book mobile service and we will get your swap on the schedule.
