An unbalanced wheel does not announce itself right away. It usually shows up as a faint buzz in the steering wheel somewhere around highway speed, easy to write off as road noise until it gets worse. Left alone, it wears the tire unevenly and puts extra stress on suspension components that were not designed to handle a wheel spinning slightly off-center for months at a time.

What balancing actually does

Every tire and wheel assembly has small variations in weight distribution, from the manufacturing process, from the valve stem, from wear over time. Balancing measures those variations and adds small weights at specific points around the rim so the assembly spins true. Get it right and the ride is smooth at every speed. Get it wrong, or skip it, and you feel it as a vibration that gets worse the faster you go.

Included with every install and swap

We balance every wheel on a Hunter SmartWeight Elite balancer as part of every new tire install and every seasonal swap, at no extra charge. It is not an upsell we mention halfway through the appointment, it is built into the job from the start. That is true whether it is a full set of four new tires ordered through Tire Rack or a fall-to-winter seasonal swap on tires you have run for years.

When you might need a standalone balance

Sometimes a wheel goes out of balance outside of an install or a swap, usually from hitting something hard, a pothole, a curb, debris in the road after a storm. If you notice a new vibration and you have not had any tire work done recently, that is a sign worth checking. Call or text (406) 260-9661 and we will get you a time to look at it.

Why the equipment matters

Older or poorly calibrated balancing equipment can leave a wheel close enough that it feels fine at low speed but still vibrates once you hit highway speed on US-93 or US-2. The Hunter SmartWeight Elite gives a more precise read on where weight actually needs to go, rather than a rough estimate, which matters more the faster the wheel is spinning.

Where we balance

Balancing happens wherever we are already doing an install or a swap, in your driveway, at your office, wherever the vehicle is parked across Kalispell, Whitefish, Columbia Falls, Bigfork, Lakeside, Somers and Evergreen.

How much does tire balancing cost?

Balancing is free on every install and every seasonal swap we do, it is built into those prices, not billed separately. If you need a standalone rebalance without an install or swap, call or text (406) 260-9661 and we will get you a time.

What does a balanced tire actually mean?

A wheel and tire assembly is never perfectly uniform in weight around its circumference. Balancing adds small weights at specific points so the assembly spins evenly instead of vibrating at speed.

How do I know if my tires are out of balance?

A steering wheel or seat vibration that shows up at a specific speed range, often somewhere between 50 and 70 miles per hour, is the classic sign. It can also show up as uneven tire wear over time.

What equipment do you use?

A Hunter SmartWeight Elite balancer, which measures the wheel assembly and places weight where it is actually needed instead of guessing.

Does hitting a pothole throw off a balance?

It can. A hard hit can knock a wheel weight loose or shift things enough to introduce a vibration that was not there before. If that happens after hitting something on Highway 35 or a rough stretch of county road, it is worth getting checked.
