The first hard cold snap of the season in the Flathead Valley almost always brings the same complaint, a TPMS light that wasn't on yesterday and now won't turn off. Before assuming something's actually wrong with a tire, it's worth understanding what the light is really responding to.
Cold Air Takes Up Less Space
Air contracts as it cools, which means the same amount of air in a tire exerts less pressure once the temperature drops. A commonly used rule of thumb is about 1 psi of pressure lost for roughly every 10 degree Fahrenheit drop in temperature. A hard overnight cold snap, the kind that can drop temperatures 20 or 30 degrees between afternoon and early morning, can knock several psi out of every tire without a single leak anywhere.
Why This Trips the Warning Light
TPMS systems are set to warn you once pressure drops below a threshold, usually a set percentage below the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure. A tire that was sitting right at the recommended number in warm fall weather can drop below that threshold purely from a cold snap, with the tire itself perfectly intact. The light isn't lying to you, pressure really did drop, it's just responding to weather rather than a puncture or leak.
What to Do When the Light Comes On
Check the pressure in all four tires once you have a chance, ideally with the tires cold, meaning the vehicle hasn't been driven for at least a few hours. Compare against the recommended pressure listed on the driver's side door jamb, not the number printed on the tire itself, since that's a maximum rating, not a recommendation. Air up any tire that's below spec, then give it a short drive and see if the light clears.
When It's Actually a Sensor Problem
If you air the tires up to the correct pressure and the light stays on, or if it clears and comes back within a day or two without any obvious reason, that points toward something beyond simple cold-weather pressure loss. A failing TPMS sensor battery, a sensor that got damaged during a previous tire change, or an actual slow leak that happens to coincide with the cold snap are all real possibilities at that point.
Why This Shows Up More in Whitefish and Higher Elevation Spots
Areas that sit higher, like the roads up toward Whitefish and Big Mountain, tend to see colder overnight lows earlier in the season than the valley floor around Columbia Falls. That means TPMS lights tend to start showing up on higher-elevation vehicles first each fall, even before drivers lower in the valley notice the same effect.
